Download CAD software using Internet Explorer 9

Question

I am trying to download CAD software from CAD International but once the download is completed, Internet Explorer 9 is saying:

The [CADFile.exe] is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer.

Is that true? Am I at risk of having my computer harmed if I install the software?

Answer

Downloading files using Internet Explorer 9 can be more difficult than expected.

Internet Explorer 9 uses SmartScreen Filter that checks software downloads “against a dynamically updated list of reported malicious software sites”.

Make sure you follow the instructions below and that your downloads come from cadinternational.com

1) Click on the download link, select Run (or Save)

Internet Explorer 9 Download Request Run or Save

2) Once the download is completed, Internet Explorer 9 will alarm to the user that the file is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer.

If your download link has come from cadinternational.com, and the URL path is genuine, then click on Actions

3) SmartScreen again will prevent you to run the installer with a message that running the program might harm your computer.

Once again, if your download link is relevant to the software you are downloading and belongs to cadinternational.com, then click on ‘More Options’ as it won’t show at first glance any option but to Delete program or Don’t run this program.

4) An additional option ‘Run anyway‘ will finally allow you to install your CAD software.

Notes

If you think SmartScreen is quite restrictive and you see yourself as an experienced Internet User, you can disable SmartScreen by going to Internet Explorer 9 Options > Safety > Turn off SmartScreen Filter.

Another alternative is to change your web browser. Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox are excellent alternatives.
